I'll be honest.
When I first heard about the Australian Hairdressing Council and its Salon Select program, a number of thoughts ran through my mind:
And then, my accountant came for her regular appointment. She's so irritating! Always on time. Always well dressed. Diamonds to die for. Overseas holidays. Outrageously organised. (I'm just a teensy bit jealous…) When she flopped in my chair and took a breath I was waiting for another long story about how fabulous she is; however, all she managed to say was: “I'm just so proud of you”. What? I was flabbergasted!
I used to think of myself as “just a hairdresser”. But in reality here I was with two successful salons, a team of motivated and brilliant hairdressers, a hair and makeup gig for a record company, a moonlighting career as an educator for Wella, a wedding hair and makeup business, a loyal client base that books up to a year in advance, and, most importantly, two gorgeous children and a loving husband. But how did this happen? And what's next? How can I become a role model for my team and secure their future in our industry?
I now realise that I am more than “just a hairdresser”. Juggling so many jobs at once has been a real circus act, but I have [finally] learned that my salons are important. They support not only my family unit, but also the lives of my team members. I am a serious professional who has worked hard on my business, implementing systems, rewarding success, inspiring my team and planning for the future. Somewhere along the journey I fell even more in love with hairdressing again.
It may sound clichéd, but here goes: I love watching a young stylist grow. I used to think that Generation Y was doomed. They're never happy, always whining, always searching, not committed. I was really wrong. I tried to justify my efforts in superiority, but I was seriously jealous.
They wont put up with crap. Why should they? They want to be shown a path to future success. Great idea! And, I've found, that they WILL work hard, if they are shown the value of hard work.
Joining the AHC has not only shown my team how committed I am to hairdressing as a long-term career, and to maintaining a sustainable industry, it has shown them how committed I am to their future. It shows other potential employees that Rokstar is a professional salon committed to best practice in employment, salon presentation, customer service and environmental commitment. My investment in the AHC is an investment in trust: the trust of my team, my clients, and my industry.
I look forward to the continual improvement that belonging to such a prestigious group will bring, and I can't wait to tell my accountant all about it.
Til then!
